A poll, or two

I need your help, fellow San Diegans. I need a handyman referral. Anyone know a great handyman? We have some house projects that are beyond Scott's or my (very limited) knowledge.

I was recently comparing local eateries with some friends. One of my only complaints about San Diego is the lack of really great restaurants. But we get stuck in our rut of usual take-out places. So where are your favorite places to eat? Big chain or little hole-in-the-wall, and don't care about the genre. I'll start -
Chinese - Chopsticks by Target and Alby's. Better than Panda, but pretty sure there's something better out there.
Mexican - haven't found the "it"place yet. And Mexican is my favorite food. I have to go to 'Zona for good Mexican!
Sushi - Japan House on Scripps Poway. Pretty good.
Sandwiches - Panera is yummy, but anyone know a better one?
Cake - Nothing Bundt Cake. Holy cow, their white chocolate raspberry makes me happy.
Whole Lotta Yogurt -I just went here the other nite. It's the place that Jen and Melissa love. Wow, that tart yogurt is good stuff! No wonder you guys are there so much! Yummy!

So where do you like to eat?

Sushi-Sushi on the Rock (for sure one in Encinitas), Japengo by the Hyatt in La Jolla (awesome after temple sushi/kinda pricey)

Mexican-i heart El Torito, also really love Rubio's nachos.

Polynesian food-L&L (they're all over LA not sure about San Diego) there is also a hole in the wall in Encinitas off a side street with great kalua pork & super cheap.

Firenze Tratatoria-is delicious! Definitely a date night restaurant.

Sbicca's in Del Mar (thank you pfizer)

We always did SubMarina for sandwiches (subs - which I miss like you wouldn't believe!) and that little restaurant in Carmel Mountain...what's it called? It's right next to Barnes & Noble & Jamba. They have good non sub sandwiches.

For mexican we always went to On The Border.

Never found a good chinese restaurant the entire 4 years, although Isaac liked China Camp downtown.

We frequent Chipotle for Mexican, Croutons for salads and sandwiches, and Pei Wei for Chinese. I would totally recommend all of them! :) Croutons is in La Jolla in the same area as Deseret Book and Islands. I recommend their Cobb salad and their Southwest Chicken sandwich.

San Diego does have L&L, there is a new one in Carmel Mountain.

I love Edelweiss Bakeries baked yummies!

Corvette Diner in Hillcrest is a great All American place to eat.

Yanni's up on Scripps Poway Parkway has the best steak ever!!

Hash House in Hillcrest, is a great breakfast place.

Chad likes Pho Cali - Vietnamese food (off Clairemont Mesa Blvd.) and a great Indian place in Hillcrest (that he can't remember the name of) but, it is right next to 24 hour fitness in Hillcrest.

Looking back on my list, it seems Hillcrest is the place to find good eats!!

Sandwiches - Spicy Pickle in Poway has unique and yummy sandwiches, Brown Bag Deli in Point Loma, Classics Malt Shop in Point Loma has good Philly Cheese Steaks

Italian - Vigiluccis Trattoria in Encinitas, Jack & Giulio's in Old Town, Villa Capri 2 in Torrey Highlands, Il Fornaio in Coronado or Del Mar (I guess I really like Italian.)

We LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Prado for nice date nights.

I thought of a couple more.

Mexican - Miguel's in Point Loma or Coronado, I'm sure there are better, but it's the best I've found

Thai - Bali Thai in Mission Valley, but I haven't had bad Thai in San Diego and I've tried a lot of them

Chinese - our favorite Chinese place in Coronado went away - so sad :(

No handyman advice for you, but I did really like the spicy pickle on Poway rd. heading east. Their sandwiches are different and so tasty!

For handy man you could ask the Butner's, he's in touch with everyone like that for houses.

sandwiches- Pronto's in Carlsbad or DZ Akins in La Mesa

Mexican- Old town has a lot of different places, I can never remember which is which, my mom and I like Cafe Coyote, Diane Keaton was recently seen there.

Japanese-authentic Japanese is very hard to find and the closest I have found is Mitsawa Marketplace in Clairemont, that's how they really do it, not Americanized. It is a grocery store with the little cafe but the food is just how I remember eating when I lived there. Sushi, Mikko House in Carlsbad is a close bet, too.

For a fancy steak house (I do mean fancy) Ruth Chris's Steak House in Del Mar, don't forget to go move the sculpture around!

Fun to find your blog and to see you in the library!

Now this is my kind of poll! I LOVE Case de Pico for mexican food. We started going there when my family came to San Diego every year when I was younger. It is DELICIOUS! It used to be in Old Towne, but has moved. You can google it, it is so yummy! Around here I love the Thai place and Yanni's both of which are over by Nothing Bundt Cakes. I also love Sammy's. The Cheesecake Factory is always a favorite go to, and The Chart House is my favorite Sea Food, get the macadamia crusted sea bass. Oh I could go on forever! I love my food!

I've enjoyed reading everyone's comments about restaurants. Yummi Maki is Cary's favorite Japanese place. I love Chipotle and Rubios for fast eats. Mimi's is a family favorite. Spices Thai is good too. As for handyman, if it is major I would use my brother. Cary is very handy though so we have only used my brother to add the addition on our house.

I found your blog!! Hey, thanks for a fun night. We'll be in touch to play again. Alright, here is our list of great places. We love the Spicy Pickle in Poway, Chipolte, Pei Wei (cheap) or PF Changs for not cheap (same exact food). For Mexican we love Fidel's in Solana Beach or Su Casa in La Jolla for the seafood tamale. RA Sushi downtown is where we head to for sushi. The Tin Fish downtown is fun for people watching and fish tacos and lobster tacos @ the Local are great. Alright, I'll stop there but if you want more downtown ideas let us know. As we got thinking about this we realized we REALLY like to eat out.

Okay, for the best authentic Italian food go to Arrivederci's on University and 4th in Hillcrest. The food is so fresh and old world Italian. I would recommend the goat cheese ravioli with arugala--to die for! Also Old Venice is a good Italian place around Canon and Rosecrans in point Loma (very romantic ambiance with lots of candles, etc).

I agree with Christin and Katie about the spicy pickle on Poway road--yum!

As for Mexican, I like Dos Picos in La Mesa on Lake Murray (good authentic "fast food" Mexican.) I also like El Torito and Acapulco's in Mission Valley.

Another good restaurant we discovered in Arizona was Gordon-Beirsch Brewery. There's one in Mission Valley as well. They have really large portions so you'll be eatin' it for lunch the next day too.

For dessert we like Marie Calendar's or Cheesecake Factory.

But my same-old place to go is California Pizza Kitchen. I can always find something I like there.
